I
began writing many years ago. So often in the mid-seventies, I used to get
carried away with short stories that I had to write for English lessons
at school. Some of them would not stay SHORT for very long!
Later
in the decade, I tried to write verse that could be turned into songs.
That never happened and some of the “song words” must have been quite
dodgy in retrospect!
I was a member of a writers’ workshop with
RCAT (Rotherham College of Arts & Technology) in the
mid-eighties.
Now I wonder what became of that? Is it still going?
I also entered poetry competitions in the 1980’s – and got
nowhere!!
The
last similar sort of thing that I was part of was a small Sheffield
writers’ group that had apparently been going since 1957! I was
associated with them from 2007-2009. I’ll have to watch out for them to
see if I can get re-acquainted sometime.
Of course, being part
of Words
& Things is a great bonus! It is really exiting as
these
are my first radio show presentations for a web based
audience. I
really enjoy collaborating with Ruth Grimsley when presenting the
Poetry show which has become very popular and was recently aired on
local radio.
Ruth
Grimsley
What
could be more interesting and wonderful than words? They hold
untold mysteries and beauties, and they
constitute what sets human beings apart from all other
animals!
Deprived
of my career as a solicitor by a serious illness, upon my recovery I
turned my attention to poetry and other writing, making music and
singing. This was in 2005, and I’ve enjoyed every moment of
it
since!
You will also find me very educational -as I
really love sharing what I know with everyone else – that is
to
say, teaching –so there’s a selection of my essays in the"Ruth
Grimsley" section. I also
love jokes, so I write "Ruth's Diary", peopled with fictional
characters, all up to the unlikeliest activities!
Thanks to Words
& Things
I have been able to venture into the wonderful world of internet media.

Poetry Heaven
Welcome to the Words and Things
radio live event podcast - The Poetry Show.
We feel that it was the best so
far, what a night!
This was our first public performance in 2011 and
at a new venue (for us)-The Dog
& Partridge public house on Trippet Lane in
Sheffield .
The event attracted a
larger than expected turnout from local supporters, including
visitors from Doncaster
and Stoke on Trent! Everyone was eager to get on the mics for this
exclusive radio/podcast recording.
Thank You
A big thanks to everyone who came along
and made the event an overwhelming success, the turn out was absolutely
wonderful. The new venue was such a perfect size for the occasion ,
there was a strong mixture of newcomers and “the old
faithful”.
We are very pleased that
our out of town guests took the trouble to come along, your support
really means a lot to us!
It was one of the very few hot nights of 2011
that I can remember (were such things so few?) and spirits were very
high.
In
brief, the openers were Duncan
and Chris
(The Sunshine Boys),
who have supported us for most
of our performance lifetime with their amusing nostalgic humour, and
visually impressive as well on this
instance!
There were also several members from the the Sheffield "Write Space"
Writers Group, all of whom performed
(some speaking in public for the very first time!)
They
all showed genuine enthusiasm for
doing more of the same at our future shows.
The
lovely Becky Virgo and
legendary local blues singer/poet Billy Martin
Junior also gave excellent performances and not
forgetting our friend
Boona
Wallace who was her great, reliable and creative self.
We
had music and song from the talented Reg Heath
and our guest
Richard
Falkner from Stoke, singing and playing in his wonderful,
amusing style. His friend, the Trent
Vale Poet, was the quirky,
stunning entertainer who is always worthy of our attention.
Thanks
also to my super WAT team colleagues – Mikey, Johnny Rockdove
and my
magnificent co-host(ess) Ruth
Grimsley – long may she be Bard (not
barred)!
Thanks for PAUL AMBER
(for being a reliable name that has
affected my life for the better in these last few years). Long may he
grow – but not old please!
Once
again, many thanks, hope you come to the next show!

The

Grimsley & Paul
Amber (Sheffield's very own poetry gurus) once again

with
their own welcoming, informal and very relaxed styles.

every performance from an essential playlist of talented individuals.
You
will hear:
Our
cheeky chums -The
Sunshine Boys (Chris Bellamy and Duncan Miller), Boona
Wallace from Doncaster, Becky Virgo,
Music from Richard
Falkner and the outspoken Trent Vale
Poet from Stoke on Trent, the famous poet/local blues
singer Billy
Martin Junior plus - Pat Bartram,
Patsy
Seddon, Neil
Simpson, Paul Taylor,
Dave
Kirby, Margaret
Roland and music from the charming Reg Heath.
A special thank you to all the guest performers
from "The Write Space"

very first time), much respect to you and your
brilliant contribution to this presentation.
